    Since vitamin B12 is necessary for the synthesis of the feel-good neurotransmitter serotonin, a lack of this nutrient may contribute to the development of clinical depression. One study found that the risk of severe depression among elderly women with disabilities who were B12 deficient was double that of those who were not deficient.

    The likelihood of recovery from major depressive disorder is also increased in those with high vitamin B12 levels.


    Macular degeneration risk is decreased

    Age-related macular degeneration is a leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 65. Vitamin B12 supplementation has been shown to reduce homocysteine in the bloodstream, which may protect against the disease. One study involving 5,000 women aged 40 and up found that, those who took vitamin B12, B6, and folic acid supplements experienced 34% fewer cases of macular degeneration after seven years. They had a 41% lower risk of developing severe degeneration.


    Healthy Pregnancy

    An infant born to a mother with a vitamin B12 deficiency is more likely to be born with neural tube defects and to be born prematurely. Premature birth and miscarriage are also more common in mothers with low B12 levels.

    Birth defects are three times more common in the children of women who are vitamin B12 deficient.

    Vitality of the Mind

    When it comes to the brain's neurons, vitamin B12 is a must-have nutrient. Dementia and memory loss have both been linked to brain atrophy, the deterioration of brain tissue.

    There is evidence from randomised controlled trials suggesting that lowering blood homocysteine levels with vitamin B12 supplements may slow the progression of dementia in older adults with early-stage disease.

    Yet another study found that even within the normal range, low B12 levels are associated with subpar memory function.

    In order to definitively determine whether or not B12 supplementation helps with memory loss and dementia, more research is necessary.
